The Role of R/C Competition
In the world of manned aircraft, there are ratings, logged hours, Type Certifications, Test Pilots Schools, etc. In the world of UAS flying there is none of that, except for one thing: competition. Competition is both the catalyst to drive pilot skill development as well as the discriminator.

As It Applies to Autonomous System Testing
In general, monkeys and small children can pilot the latest generation ready to fly multi rotor flying cameras. But what about during development, when a system fails and the only way home is flying a dot in a challenging manual mode without breaking your altitude limit. That is when high-caliber UAS pilots are essential.

Education
BS Aerospace Engineering Degree from the University of New York at Buffalo, 1986.
MS Aeronautical Engineering from the George Washington University, 1988.
NASA Langley Research Center
- 1986 to 1988 Two years of experience with cryogenic transonic wind tunnel testing.
- 1988 to 1997: Nine years of subsonic stability and control wind tunnel testing in NASA LaRC's 30x60 Full Scale wind tunnel. Also include control system design, piloted simulation development and testing and subscale UAS flight dynamic flight testing.
- 1997 to 2006: Human factors research including simulation and flight testing using NASA LaRC's Boeing 757, Cessna 206, and Calspan's Total In Flight Simulator (TIFS). Research included Synthetic and eXternal Vision Systems applied to commercial and general aviation.
- 2006 to 2016: Entry, Descent and Landing Technologies including development of the Multi-Mission Earth Entry Vehicles and advanced thermal protection systems. Experience with System IDentification techniques applied to Entry Vehicles.
- 2000 to 2011: AirSTAR project. External UAS pilot for T-2 flight dynamics research vehicle, more than 1,000 high-performance turbine powered UAS flights.
- 2016 to 2025: Extensive experience in integrated autonomous system UAS flight testing in support of NASA's UAS Traffic Management Project and High Density Vertiplex project. Led the integration of ground control facilities, surveillance systems, and NASA developed technologies at LaRC to enable real no-visual observer beyond visual line of sight operations (BVLOS). Led generation of Safety Case and UAS remote pilot training material to enable BVLOS operations. Served as the Aeronautics Systems Engineering Branch (ASEB) Branch Head from 2021 to 2025.
Full Scale Flying
- 1978: Soloed in gliders at the age of 15.
- 1979: Earned Private Pilots License for Gliders.
- 1980: Earned Private Pilots License for Airplanes (Powered Aircraft).
- 1990: Acquired Instrument Rating.
- 2015: Earned Certificated Flight Instructor Certificate, more than 1100 sailplane flights and 600 total hours in sailplanes and single engine land aircraft.
R/C Flying
Too many things to list but here are some highlights:
- First R/C flight around 1973.
- Have been active in R/C flying every year since then!
- Multi-time Eastern Soaring League Champion. First one in 1985, probably 15 or 20 more over the ensuing years.
- Multi-time National Champion: most recent 2025 Unlimited and 2-Meter champion. 2022 UAS F3J Team pilot, won the team gold medal world championship in Levice, Slovakia.
